Assam and Manipur are battling floods that have displaced lakhs, claiming 48 lives as on July 3. Northeastern states under red alert by India Meteorological Department. In Assam, 29 out of total 33 districts are reeling under the impact of floods where over16.5 Lakh people have been affected so far with all major rivers above danger levels in most places causing some breaches and embankment erosion at several place along these river stretches due to continued spate since last few days. Of them Assam has reported 8 casualties and two people have succumbed to the virus in Kerala. Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma is on tour to the affected areas and has ordered speedy relief operations. In Imphal West and East, severe flooding has forced the closure of schools in Manipur. Deforestation and riverbank encroachment account for the flooding.
