Mumbai faces severe traffic, waterlogging, and public transport disruptions as IMD warns of extremely heavy rainfall.

Mumbai: The city is likely to see very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Friday. It said residents should get ready for long traffic jams, waterlogging in several parts and disruption of public transport. During the day, Maharashtra continued to be battered by heavy showers that wreaked havoc over 24 hours. The district has so far seen six deaths, and 12 casualties have occurred due to the rain. Hundreds of people also evacuated from low-lying areas to safety zones with the city resembling a flood-like situation. It is those dreaded scenes of July 26, 2005 - when the city was battered with close to an unprecedented run of nearly sustained almost 900mm rainfall over Mumbai and surroundings for entire day killing over thousand lives along with derailing infrastructure at several places. The externality considered here currently bores fears of a potential disaster like the one above.
