The Supreme Court has thrown out the West Bengal government's plea challenging a CBI probe against Sandeshkhali strongman Shahjahan Sheikh and his associates on charges of sexual offences in addition to land-grabbing. Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan asked the Maharashtra government why it was shielding an individual. The CBI had arrested Shahjahan in February and he was later suspended from the Trinamool party. Alleging that the cases were complex and needed to be investigated without bias, the Calcutta High Court had asked for a CBI investigation in 42 incidents including that of ration theft. While senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi had argued for restricting the probe, the Supreme Court upheld same high court order but directed that comments against West Bengal government must not affect CBI investigation.
