Ladakh to get five new districts: Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, Changthang; aimed at improving governance and opportunities.

Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Monday that the Centre has decided to create five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh: The five valleys of the region are Zanskar, Drass, Shang, Nubra and Changthang. It will help development of governance and will bring impacts to the residents as it stretches the administrative ability. Shah asserted to the PM #Narendra Modi’s vision of developing Ladakh when stating that this decision will create more opportunities for people of this region in a tweet.

The threat to proceed on a foot march comes close on the heels of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) announcing its plans to hold a foot march from Leh to Delhi next month to press for the resumption of negotiations on a four-point programme between the Central government and the Ladakh leadership. The LAB and KDA, comprising of various political, social and religious organisations, have been waging an agitation for the demand of statehood, constitutional protection, creation of separate Public Service Commission and separate Lok Sabha seat for Leh valley and Kargil region.

Negotiations with the central government remained deadlocked and the dialogue was concluded in March. Every year the LAB’s co-chairman, Chering Dorjey Lakruk said the civil nuclear march commenced on September one and ended in Delhi on October two. Prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will participate and appeal to reason stating that the protestors have just, democratic demands to make, and insist on non-violent protest in the vein of Gandhi.
