IMD Issues Red Alert for Gujarat; Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Waterlogging and Displacements


IMD has also predicted a Red alert in Gujarat state where there will be Heavy to extremely heavy rain fall in the next 2-3 days due to deep depression over enhanced Rajasthan now moving towards Saurashtra. Hazardous weather continues to prevail; the recent heavy rain has led to water buildup that threatens the inhabitants of affected regions as well as floods several districts thus displacing hundreds of people.


The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr. Bhupendra Patel also arranged a meeting at the State Emergency Operation Centre at Gandhingar to review the condition. Till now, 17,827 people have been evacuated and 1653 people have been rescued operation, NDRF 13 teams and SDRF 22 teams are working hard for it. All the primary schools in the state will be shut on Tuesday because of the prevailing water logging.


Unfortunately 7 people were drowned in a trolley tractor in Morbi district’s Halvad taluka. The search and rescue operation is still under way with the NDRF and SDRF joining hands to help trace the people but they have still not been found after 20 hours. In all 280 persons were evacuated from the flood prone areas of Bharuch after nearly 4 lakh cusecs of water was let into the Narmada which raised the river levels above the danger mark. 

 

The IMD has asked fisherfolk to stop fishing in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal till August 30 while those living in waterlogged areas have been cautioned to remain wary and to keep an eye on traffic updates.
