In RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a trainee doctor that was 31 years old was raped and murdered and after this incident the parents of the victim received threatening phone calls from the hospital staff. The first call was made by the assistant superintendent on 9-aug asking the family to come to the hospital because their daughter was not well, they were told this; “Your daughter is not well, can you please come to the hospital immediately. ” When the father wanted details of what was wrong with his daughter, the staff member did not tell him much, instead, he told the father to come to the hospital and doctors would explain to them,
The second call depicted a worse condition during which the staff encouraged, “Her condition is very critical, Please come as soon as can . ” The father’s concern grew, but he was not given any further details. The third and the final call was the most sorrowful, where the staff member, who seemed rather hysterical said, “she might have taken her life or died, the police are here. ”
These a series of events of culminated into suspicion on the events that led to the death of the doctor together with the hospital’s reactions. Concerning this tragedy the victim’s family is calling for investigations to be conducted.
Among them one most active civic volunteer identified as Sanjay Roy, who was very often seen, at RG Kar Municipal Hospital, was arrested on 10 th August. He was also found on CCTV footage going into the seminar hall in which the body of the victim was discovered. High profile complaints called for justice from the public, and thus the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to CBI after protest demonstrations.
