UAE halts $19B deal for Rafale jets with France after Telegram CEO Pavel Durov's arrest over illicit activities.


After their arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also put on hold a major defense agreement with the French. The French national and citizen of the UAE, Durov was detained in France over the weekend as a part of an investigation into the criminal activities that took place through the messaging app, Telegram. The allegations against Durov arose due to the fact that theору The accusations are linked to the fact that the platform did not prevent illicit operations like drug trafficking and the distribution of material featuring child exploitation. 

 

 In the case of reaction to Durov’s arrest, the UAE, which has an agreement with France over the buying of 80 Rafale fighter planes from French aerospace company Dassault, has now halted the agreement as reported by Iran’s Mehr News agency with Avia. pro. This suspension threatens the deal, which is the core of the client’s UAE-France military relationship. Thus, according to the report, the UAE is already planning a complete cessation of military-technical cooperation with France if the situation worsens. 

 

 The UAE has already demanded consular help to Durov, who, as of Tuesday, was not charged officially. According to Associated Press, Durov may be detained until Wednesday at which the judge will decide whether to charge him or release him.
