West Bengal Police label Nabanna march illegal, citing lack of permission. Organizers demand CM Mamata Banerjee's resignation.

West Bengal Police have described the proposed rally towards the state Secretariat – Nabanna– as ‘unauthorised’. The march, called "Nabanna Abhijan," was organized by two groups: Paschim Banger Chhatra Samaj and Sangrami Joutha Mancha who are protest for resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee after the alleged rape and murder of a doctor.

As per the information given by ADG (Law and Order) Manoj Verma, there was no written or oral request received from the side of the organizers of the rally to prevent it. Despite the fact that the organisers later emailed the police informing them of the event, no permission was given. It is worthy of note that Nabanna is a section 163 of BNSS no-entry zone which bans more than five people to assemble.

Verma pointed out that, The Supreme Court has over time permitted demonstrations and protests but has also said that states can take legal steps to avert lawlessness. He said that any gatherings within close proximity to Nabanna need the permission of the police force, which nearly always denies. Verma said that some anti-social elements may enter the area and disturb the situation so, people should stay away from this place.

The police have suggested other locations that the protest could be held with one condition that procedures of the law are followed. They also said to the public that for UGC NET exams that are held on the same day, all the necessary arrangements are on the place. This, because to manage the situation effectively, the traffic around Nabanna building located in Howrah shall be restricted.
