Assam witnesses protests after the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl; Chief Minister demands harsh punishment for the accused.


Horrific gang rape of a minor girl of 14 years of Nagaon district of Assam has raised many eyeballs and protests. The case occurred in Dhing where the young girl was reported to have been attacked by three men on a motorbike at about Thursday evening as she was arriving from tuition. This reportedly assaulted her and left her for dead by a pond by the side of the road. Unfortunately, other people found her, local people, who immediately reported her to the authorities. She was taken to a nearby health center where she received first aid and then was taken to the Nagaon hospital for further tests. 

The Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reacting to the crime said, that the act was shameful and that stringent action should be taken against the culprit. Police have registered an FIR for the abuse of minor using the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. One of the suspects has been arrested, another is detained. The third accused died on Saturday after he was alleged to have drowned in a pond while in police custody in a re-enactment. 

Due to the occurrence of the event people of Nagaon and other associated districts have protested demanding justice for the death happened and improvement in the safety measures to be provided. This case is another in series of three other recent survivals of sexual assault in India that has elicited public anger and call for justice.
