The CBI on Saturday arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge Tala police station for fabricating evidence and covering up in front of CBI in connection to the investigation of the rape and murder of the RG Kar Medical College doctor. Finally after giving seven hours grilling, Mondal who had not responded how outsiders entered the crime scene or why he did not lodge the FIR immediately was picked up.

Apart from Mondal, the arrestee included former principal Sandip Ghos of the medical college of South Bengal. Ghosh was in prison before for embezzlements and fraudulent activities and also been accused in the doctor’s murder case as well. It may be mentioned here that CBI had started probing the case from August 14 after a direction of Calcutta High Court. Both arrests represent the first major events since the central agency started its investigation.

Mondal had skipped the CBI summons earlier on the medical ground but he turned up for the questioning at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake on Saturday. Concerning Mondal sources suggested he was asked severally but he continued to shift blame. He stated this vehemently as they half-dragged him out for a compulsory medical check up after being arrested.

The CBI also remains eager to investigate the participation of Kolkata Police members to the case as investigation goes on. This incident happened after the doctor’s body was found lifeless on a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
