The Congress on Monday also called for SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch to resign for allegedly breaching Section 54 of SEBI. The Congress leaders allege that from April 2017 to October 2021 when Buch was a full time SEBI member and from March 2022 SEBI Chairperson, she continued to draw regular salary from ICICI Bank. As per Khera, the income of Buch from ICICI Bank was Rs 16. 80 crore including ESOPs, she asked how she could take a salary from ICICI while being a SEBI member.
Khera further accused Buch of violating SEBI regulations and if she had any self respecting she should quit. The Congress stepped up its attack after Hindenburg Research accused Buch and her husband of having links to offshore funds used in the Adani money-laundering scandal. Buch has dismissed these allegations together with her husband.
Adani Group denied all allegations made by Hindenburg and called them fake and manipulative especially regarding any business dealings with Buch and her husband. In response, BJP condemned Congress for associating with foreign companies with an intention of vitiating the Indian economy. Sudhanshu Trivedi of BJP took this point to note how global reports are always released before Parliament sittings with an aim at causing confusion. He also alleged that the opposition parties are looking for the intervention of foreign powers to destabilise economy in India.
