The government has recently removed minimum export price (MEP) on onions to enable farmers in India reap from surplus in international market. Formerly, a floor price of $550 per tonne was provided that does not let the farmers to export their products below this price. The MEP was thus withdrawn on September 13 by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), to boost exports in view of assembly polls in Maharashtra which is a large producer of onion.

The notification no 3/2015-2020 of the DGFT also withdrawal the MEP on basmati rice export. A commerce minister, Piyush Goyal appreciated the decision as it would increase farmers’ revenue by offering additional export markets. This comes in the backdrop of last year’s MEP restrictions on basmati rice where the initial MEP was $1,200 per tonne which was later lowered to $, 950 per tonne.

India being the largest exporter of rice supplies 4-5 million MT of basmati rice to countries of Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the US As a result of these measures, the government hopes to improve its political scenario in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, the two agricultural states. It was assumed that this policy shift will improve farmers’ revenues and grow the market to deliver Indian produce globally.
