Junior Doctors Await SC Hearing for Clarity on Rape-Murder Case, Strike Continues

Junior doctors are still looking towards Supreme Court for hearing in the case of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata on 9th August. The hearing which is presided over by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud is set for Monday at 10:30am. The doctors’ anxieties for the investigation concern the number of people that were involved and the reason behind the heinous crime. 

 

 The doctors are currently on a seven day working 27 days strike and this has resultd to Academic and other services disruptions in government medical colleges. This demand of the group was stated by Aniket Mahato who is a postgraduate trainee and the group wanted information on the CBI investigation handed over by the Calcutta High Court on August 13. No further arrests have been made since the arrest made by the Kolkata Police on the 10th Of August. 

 

 The delegation comprising of five junior doctors was called to meet CBI officials on 23rd Aug but there was no update as current investigation is under the Supreme Court’s scrutiny. Events which took place after the protest The doctors insisted to know who Vineet Goyal is, the police commissioner of Kolkata, whose resignation they have been demanding, met the demonstrators on August 11 and showed them documents of the preliminary inquiry. 

 

 However, the doctors also intend to sustain their strike until the next Supreme Court meeting, while they are also evaluating to return to the emergency services or expand the number of Abhaya Clinics for the patient during the protest.
