West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee has accepted most of the demands that the striking doctors are look forward during protest to demand justice for the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor in RG Kar Hospital. Subsequently, Banerjee announced the sacking of prominent officers and personnel such as the Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, the Director of Medical Education and the Director of Health Services. She also made a call to affirm a choice for a new police commissioner following a hearing in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Banerjee was having a meeting with the doctors who were on strike at her Kalighat residential place, she appealed to them to go back to their jobs and also assured that nobody would be terminated for protesting. The decisions above were formally made in a signed agreement between the state and the doctors.

It also passed ₹100 crore to upgrade hospital infrastructures and created the task force with an aim to look into safety issues in hospitals. These will include an implementation of an effective grievance redressal system.

Despite these steps, the doctors have said they will escalate their actions of protest until such time that these promises are realized in full. The protests which have started 38 days ago after the trainee doctor’s death has made a harsh toll on West Bengal’s state run health services as the doctors demand justice and proper safety precautions in the hospitals.
