Manipur Suspends Internet Amid Protests, Fresh Wave of Violence Escalates

However, due to fresh protest by students, the Manipur government has shut down internet services throughout the state for 5 days from September 10. This is unlike its earlier attempts to check the circulation of hate speech, videos and pictures on social media through the state home department. The restrictions, which impact mobile data, lease lines and broadband services the aim of which is timed to September 15. 

 

 Earlier in the day, several students and women carrying out a protest for near the Raj Bhavan were dispersed with tear gas by the security forces. They have been protesting for the ouster of The Director General of Police(DGP) and the security advisor to the Manipur government. Protests were also organised at Manipur University wherein students burnt an effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 

 

 In Imphal East and West districts, many proved were given and curfew was declared while additional prohibitory orders were put in Thoubal. In the past few weeks the violence situation in Manipur has aggravated; at least eight people have been killed and over a dozen injured in drone and missile attacks. 

 

 These threats were on Saturday followed by Manipur Police deploying anti-drone systems. IGP (Intelligence) K Kabib said that they are trying to source for more sophisticated weapons to deal with the drones. Also, remnants of rockets as well as drones were also seized by the police in recent incidents proving the existence of utilization of advanced equipment on innocent people.
