Sanjay Raut Sentenced to 15 Days in Jail for Defamation in Somaiya Case

Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has been convicted for the offence of defamation and has been given a using punishment of 15 days imprisonment. The ruling was made by a metropolitan magistrate in Mazgaon, Mumbai who also fined Raut ₹25,000. Dr. Medha Kirit Somaiya, the wife of political BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed the case Raut accused the Somaiyas of misappropriating ₹100 crore scam with regard to construction of public toilets in Mira Bhayandar.


Dr. Somaiya, a professor of Organic Chemistry, said that Raut is lying against her circumstance detrimentally affected her and her husband. She said in her complaint that it was defamatory remarks made by Raut through the media to tarnish her reputation.


Raut was convicted under provision 500 of India’s Penal Code governing defamation and was given 15 days imprisonment in addition to the fine.


Raut’s lawyer and brother Sunil Raut said that they had indeed filed bail application and would approach the Mumbai sessions court for the appeal. The case has received a lot of media attention since Raut made the allegations in April 2022 the media and people on social media shared the story widely.


This verdict brings legal change in the case of Raut who is well-known political leader in Maharashtra.
