Swamy files plea for court-monitored inquiry into claims of animal fat in Tirupati laddus, sparking political debate.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has had filed a petition in the apex court of the country requesting the court to order investigation into allegations involving the use of animal fat in preparation of the renowned laddu of the famous Tirupati temple. Swamy for the relief has filled the petition praying the Andhra Pradesh government to file a detailed report regarding the source and quality check of the ghee used in the laddus prepared in various temples across the state. He also requested for an audit from the relevant authorities and urged increasing internal controls which would improve the quality of ingredients provided for the temple prasads.

Swamy through a tweet continued saying, that his petition is an attempt to probe into ‘non-sense’ verbal pin for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for levelling serious allegations on adulteration of Tirupati laddu with animal product. The claims have excited much controversy among devotees and a political firestorm.

Similarly, Y.V. Subba Reddy, a former Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and a Member of Parliament, has petitioned the Supreme Court for an independent investigation under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge.

This began when Naidu claimed that animal fat had been used in the preparation of laddus during Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy ‘s time in office. YSR Congress Party has condemned Naidu for making such ‘heinous allegations’ and pointed out that it is politically motivated. J. Shyamala Rao of the TTD said that laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of animal fat in the samples and the vendor who supplied this fake ghee is being banned.
