Swachh Bharat Mission Saves 60,000-70,000 Infant Lives Annually, Study Reveals

A study has found out that, India’s Swachh Bharat Mission initiated in the year 2014 has ensured the reduction of 60,000-70,000 infant deaths per year by the use of toilets. The two-year study that was published in Scientific Reports showed that under five years mortality in infants and children decreased between 2000 to 2020. Scientists from the IFPRI identified that 35 states and over 600 districts and found that a 30% raise in latrine stems in fact reduced infant mortality. 

 

 Swachh Bharat mission, a campaign promoted by the Right Honorable Prime minister of India, Narendra Modi was to ensure eradication of open defecation through provision of toilets in rural house holds. Over the past two years, nearly 120 million toilets have been constructed in both rural and urban areas, said Hardeep Puri, minister. This paper examines the effectiveness of national sanitation efforts for changing public health for children.
