Olympian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are expected to contest the Haryana Assembly elections on a Congress ticket, as reported by ANI. The two athletes are likely to resign from their current posts soon, following their meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal in Delhi.
This development comes just a day after the Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) held a meeting to finalize its list of candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections. According to Deepak Babaria, AICC in-charge for Haryana, the CEC has finalized 34 candidates, with the full list expected to be released by August 4.
Recently, Vinesh Phogat expressed her support for the ongoing farmers' protest at the Shambhu border, where she was honored with garlands. Both Phogat and Punia have been vocal about their stance against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, demanding his removal following multiple allegations of sexual harassment by women wrestlers.
