Junior doctors of several medical colleges in the city had conferences on Thursday regarding the further course of their stir over rape and murder of a 31 year old post graduate trainee of RG Kar Medical College. The young doctors who returned to work last Tuesday after three months stay at home are still torn between whether to continue with the strike or go back to treating patients.
The senior doctors that have been working extra hours to support the cause of the strike were consulted during these meetings. Another ‘he’ is Aniket Mahato, a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar, thanked the seniors for their support and said further meetings would be held with other medical colleges to decide the future course of action.
Bipresh Chakraborty, a senior resident doctor in SSKM Hospital, pointed out that protest must continue because the case might get lost in oblivion. He stressed that their demands such as demand for safety for doctors have not been met. The junior doctors have demanded raising of protest while waiting for revelations of the ongoing CBI investigation.
During a meeting with the Medical College Kolkata, doctors considered one option of protest including continuing cease-work or any other variation of the protest. A junior doctor from RG Kar stated that it is wrong to just look at its [Royal College of Nursing] interests and stated that everyone should also look at what is best for the patients and what’s best for them.
The Indian Medical Association has come out to call on its junior doctors to go back to work. Nevertheless, the junior doctors are even considering an intensified form and for that, Delhi can be a possible venue but this has to be done without forgetting the community.
